Kindergarten Weather Unit Uses Data, Experiments, and Observation to Study Weather

Meteorologists Al Roker and Alex Calamia better watch out because Mandalay Elementary School kindergarten students may take their job one day. Students enjoyed an engaging weather unit exploring different types of weather and learned about “expert weather vocabulary” terms such as downpour, cloudy, and gusty.
Each day for five days, students observed the weather while journaling their findings on various changes. Using pictures to create a five-day forecast, students thought and shared their favorite types of weather and activities they enjoy during each event.
Using experiments with fans, water bottles, and paper towels, Ms. Gitman, Science Coach, visited each class to teach students why the wind caused one side of a pole to get wet during rain showers while the other side remained dry. Using data, it was exciting to track and discover why a snowman would melt and other times it didn’t.
With a new excitement for weather of all kinds, the students will now understand when it’s best to wear a coat, sweater, shorts, or rain boots based on their observations.
