Cold and Flu Season Safety

Cold, flu and strep season has once again arrived. I am requesting that you reinforce the following general health habits by discussing them with your children at home.

  1. Wash hands frequently. Studies have shown that washing hands at least 5 times a day can help reduce the chance of getting sick. Remind your children to wash their hands after using the bathroom, after coughing, sneezing or blowing their nose and before eating. Your child can bring an individual sealed towelette for use in the lunchroom before lunch.

  2. Never share your food with anyone (many germs are spread by hands).

  3. Never put fingers or any objects in your mouth. When wiping your mouth after eating or drinking use a napkin.

  4. When drinking from the water fountain never put your lips on the fountain.

  5. Dress appropriately for the weather (hats, gloves, etc.). We will have outdoor recess as long as the temperature is above freezing.

  6. Get at least eight (8) hours of sleep each night.

  7. Never skip meals and include lots of fresh fruits and vegetables in your diet.

  8. If your child is sent home or stays home due to illness it is expected that he/she remains symptom free (fever, nausea, vomiting) without medication such as Tylenol or Advil, for 24 hours before returning to school. For example, if a child has a fever on Tuesday, he/she is not to return to school until Thursday, and may only return on Thursday if he/she has not needed Tylenol or Advil to reduce the fever on Wednesday.

  9. If your child has a sore throat please take them for a throat culture. They are then required to stay home from school until you know the results of the culture.

  10. If your child has a positive throat culture for strep they must remain home for 48 hours after starting medication. It is recommended that you discard the old toothbrush and use a new one after 48 hours on antibiotics.

  11. If your child is well enough to be in school it is expected that he/she will participate in gym and/or recess unless they have a doctor's note.

It is only with the combined efforts of home and school that your children will become more aware of and practice good health habits. We do need your help to make this work.

Thank you for your cooperation.
