Mandalay Student Council Leads “Treats for Troops” Collection
Mandalay Student Council honored veterans this year with their annual “Treats for Troops” Candy Drive now in its fifth year. Assorted wrapped candy was collected through November 4 filling approximately 10 boxes ready to be sent to troops currently deployed across the world.
Angela Nordquist from the Long Island Chapter of Blue Star Mothers of America, a registered non-profit organization that supports troops abroad, told students that troops can’t just go to the store around the corner for a treat while deployed in dangerous places. Candy provides a “piece of home” to troops who are away from their family. Ms. Nordquist also shared that chocolate candy couldn’t be sent because of the various temperatures that occur during shipping.
In addition to treats, troops will also receive a handwritten card created by Mandalay students.
