Veterans Day served as a reminder for students at Mandalay Elementary School about the sacrifices that have been made by countless Americans through their service in the different branches of the military. 

Children showed their appreciation to those who have served, past and present, by wearing red, white and blue attire to school on Nov. 10. The student council hosted a candy drive and collected more than 600 pounds of sweet treats. The candy, along with cards and letters from students, were given to Long Island Blue Star Moms to make care packages for men and women presently serving in the military both at home and abroad. 

Student council members said they hope that these care packages will bring joy to servicemen and women.

“It’s a treat for the troops, because they have done a lot for the country,” Matteo Tretter said. 

“It’s important because they’ve done so much for us, and it’s time for us to give something back to them,” added Kaya Mekeel.

Thomas Nappi noted that joining the military is a decision they make to protect all Americans, and they should be recognized for their bravery and courage.

On the morning before Veterans Day, fifth graders in Nicole Romagnuolo’s class were given a reading passage to learn more about the history and significance of the national holiday, including how it differs from Memorial Day. Students also talked about veterans in their own families.
